It's weird to think about Goombas to any capacity because Paper Mario does confirm they are essentially as personable as people, and Mario even teams up with one. And even a Bob-omb too. So it might as well be canon that Mario has stomped out several hundreds of sentient people, and is totally fine just overlooking that.
