That is weird, I expected to be oil(it's color is often depicted as black, and oil is essential the typical lifeblood of robots). Another question is why EVE is holding a shotgun? IIRC, the initial cut actually didn't include the credits reel showing the planet improving -- it was added after the director (Andrew Stanton) thought test audiences believed the humans would've been unable to cope and died.

Wasn't there a scene before the credits rolled where we could see more plants growing just beyond the city where the Axiom landed? Life was probably already sustainable then, it's just that it took a lot of effort (and one singular plant that just happens to be growing in the general search area) for everyone else to notice.
